Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah - is an American performer, actress and acrobat. Her career as a musician as well as a film and television artist has won the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah, the daughter of the Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was born and raised within Newark New Jersey. Latifah's mother and father separated at the time Latifah turned ten. Latifah lived within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage when she reached the age of eight. It means sensitive in Arabic. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was on the high school basketball team. In her high school's play Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her journey into beatboxing. Latifah is one of the first participants of Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
